Mud, bio, local, ecological ...

Traditionally, mud (also called adobe or banco), wood, stone and terracotta were the main building materials.

In the Sahel region, adobe houses are a real shelter against the heavy heat which can reach 50 degrees Celsius, bringing diseases and mosquitoes.
"Banco" construction consists mainly of sand, clay, and water; but straw, wood chips, cow dung, lime, shea butter ... can be added to bring some more texture.
Banco is a100% recyclable local material, protecting against deforestation and CO2 emission, resisting to fire, xylophagous insects, fungi and mold.
Some would criticize its rustic and severe aspect ...

This is Boubacar Assoumane residence, in Niamey. 10 years later, it still preserves the family against the heat.

Dried, mud brick are very resistant and solid.

The bricks are attached to each other by a wet banco.
To stall them, the masons use small pebbles.

Manhatan of the desert

The city of Shibam is located in the desert of Ramlat al-Sab'atayn in Yemen. This city of mud is the world oldest skyscraper:

Founded in the 3rd century BC,
500 houses,
Built solely in earthen bricks,
Some buildings are moreover 30 meters high! It is for this reason that it is called the Manhattan of the desert.
First city in the history of mankind having built "skyscrapers".

Mud, mud, mud

Mud is a building material dating back centuries ago.

Here in Turkmenistan, are the ruins of the great Kyz-Kala from the 6th century BC.The Great Kyz Kala, or “Maiden’s Castle,” is the largest in a group of buildings outside the west wall of Sultan Kala, which includes, the Lesser Kyz Kala, 250 meters (820 feet) to the south, the Kyz Bibi complex, approximately 300 meters (984 feet) to the north-east, and two more köshks, or fortress-like buildings, to the north.

The Greater Kyz Kala is the largest köshk in the Merv Oasis, only a little smaller than the Palace in Shahriyar Ark. This two-story köshk, approximately aligned north-south, consists of a rectangular platform with sloping sides with corrugated walls above.
